Best Practice for Initial User Creation with Custom Attributes

Let’s Begin!

Part 1:
Create your .csv file and add the appropriate column headers to match custom attributes

Your .csv file for initial user creation will require the following fields (at a minimum):
• Firstname
• Lastname
• Email
• Password

Any additional column headers are considered “custom attributes.” This means that any of these additional headers will need to be duplicated exactly inside of dialogEDU, so that the system can properly receive all of the information in your file.

In this case, this custom attribute would be considered the department header under Column E, highlighted below. This next part will consist of creating the custom attribute inside of dialogEDU.

Part 2:
Create your custom attribute(s) in dialogEDU

Custom attributes can be created at both the Account (Cloud) and/or at the Site level. Creating custom attributes at the account level allows you to apply the custom attribute to all sites or assign it one specific site within the cloud. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will review creating Custom Attributes at the cloud level.

To Begin:
a. Go to account level
b. Click People
c. Click Users
d. Click Customize
e. Select +Add Attribute

f. Create the custom attribute

Label:
The Label (Title) of the attribute will be need to be an identical match to the column header inside of your .csv file.

Input type:
There are multiple options available on the format in which you wish to capture the user/member information. For example, text, integer, currency, and dropdown.

Add List Element:
Once the Dropdown option is selected, the Add List Element creation will appear. It is recommended that you start with a value titled Select a (name of Label), this is the option that will appear by default.

Site:
Determine whether or not the custom attribute will exist in All sites or in one specific site within the cloud.

Editable:
When checked, the member or user will have the ability to edit this attribute in their profile.

Required:
When checked, any time a user is created, the information for this custom attribute must be filled in.

Hidden:
When checked, the custom attribute will not appear in the user’s profile nor will administrative personnel be able to select the custom attribute when creating an achievement badge or target group.

Expose in Liquid:
When checked, the custom attribute will be included in the Liquid framework.

g. When finished, click Save

After conducting your .csv file upload, confirm that your users/members have been uploaded successfully with their selection of the custom attribute(s) by clicking on Download CSV in the Members area under People.
